masks (and, little by little, also other objects)
I look back now and realise that it's been quite a while that I've been producing objects, in a more or less self-taught way, but also with a bit of information from my (incomplete) set design studies in University. lately I noticed how much this has influenced my choreographic work, and how much a desire to produce this kind of materials keeps coming back into my work: in the piece where we made stencils, in 'Half of the piece...' with making the costumes and fixing the chairs and using the slides, in México with the perforated paper and the slides, and also everywhere through the graphics.
the clearest examples are, for me, the masks and the furniture. my grandmother used to buy a mask for me every time she was traveling. Jorge Abelardo Ramos, who was a close friend with my parents, gave me my first 'adult' present: a big book about masks that he brought from Mexico. then, since around 1996 I started collecting masks more seriously, and making some myself. I started working with papier maché, and quickly turned to collage and assembling things, mainly trying to escape my embarrasing painting (un)skills.
also, around 1998 I made my first bookcases and a very beautiful stair for getting into my bedroom, which used to be a mezzanine. in the last couple of years, living in Amsterdam, I started again making some pieces of furniture for my often-empty appartments: a couple of tables, a small piece for my clothes. on the way, I participated twice in the Table Talks project by Igor Dobricic, in which we made... tables.
this is a gallery of the masks I made, plus some furniture and other small objects.
